lakehead's faculty of education and school of kinesiology originally challenged each other to the walk as a friendly gesture, and to see who could generate the most interest among the university community. "the main purpose of this event," explains glen paterson, coordinator, practice of kinesiology and community placements, "is to challenge the current world record for the number of people involved in a simultaneous, 1 kilometre walk. the walk only takes about 30 minutes, but it encourages people to get outside, to get active, and to play a personal, local, and nationwide role in breaking this record." the standing record was set in western australia in 2006.
check-in takes place at 12:10 p.m. on wednesday, october 3. interested parties are asked to gather at the c.j. sanders fieldhouse parking lot or at the library end of the bora laskin building. participants have the option to walk from the fieldhouse to the university centre and back, or from the bora laskin to the university centre and back. walking from the fieldhouse to the bora laskin is an optional route as well. the walk officially begins at 12:30 p.m. sharp.
