findings will be drawn from website survey questions geared to residents of red rock, nipigon, schreiber, terrace bay, and marathon. the survey's questions will determine popular recreation and tourist activities, locations in and around the target communities as well as their characteristics, and the reason for which residents continue to travel to these destinations during their leisure time.
"by collecting and mapping this information, we can create a geographical model of the areas most frequently used for recreational purposes such as hiking, fishing, relaxation, or just for environmental appreciation," says lesueur. "this input may ultimately improve both current and future planning processes for these recreational areas."
upcoming open houses will serve as information sessions: lesueur and her colleagues will present information about the project, and will guide those who wish to complete the surveys at a later date, through the basics of completing the online survey.
lesueur's research will be supervised by one of lakehead's professors of outdoor recreation, parks and tourism, dr. norman mcintyre, who will direct lesueur in the writing of her thesis. the maps will be used to display and convey general information only, as published materials will be limited to combined data gathered from the entire surveyed population. all responses to the survey questions will remain anonymous, and will only be made available to members of the research team.
