is pleased to announce the appointment of two new canada research chairs (crcs), drs. alla reznik and gregory pyle.
dr. reznik has been awarded an nserc tier ii crc in the physics of molecular imaging valued at $100,000 per year, for five years. dr. pyle has also been awarded a five-year nserc tier ii crc in environmental biotechnology and ecotoxicology valued at $100,000 per year.

dr. reznik's research will make use of unique developments in photo-detection, to develop an advanced solid-state technology for positron emission tomography (pet) imaging. this technology will facilitate early diagnosis of cancer, as well as efficient monitoring of treatment progress of the disease. as early detection of cancer leads to a very high cure rate, this research promises to deliver important and substantial public health benefits. dr. reznik has also been appointed as a scientist with thunder bay regional research institute (tbrri) as part of the research and innovation partnership between lakehead and tbrri.
dr. pyle's research revolves around the ways that human activities may interfere with chemical communication systems used by aquatic animals in their environment. powerful, dissolved, info-chemicals in the aquatic environment are used by animals to convey important information related to vital life processes, such as the location of food or predators, genetic quality and reproductive status of potential mates, and the location of migratory routes. this research focuses on the role of chemical communication in maintaining aquatic ecosystem integrity, and the effects of metals on biological processes from molecular through to the ecosystem level of organization.
