lakehead prof's invention may help treat and control diabetes: prestigious w. lash miller award recognizes research of dr. aicheng chen
(november 4, 2009 - thunder bay, on) 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is pleased to announce that dr. aicheng chen, chemistry professor at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and canada research chair in material and environmental chemistry has won the prestigious w. lash miller award from the canadian section of the electrochemical society.
established in 1967, the award honours the memory of the eminent canadian chemist and recognizes candidates - excellence in publications and/or technical contributions in the field of electrochemical science and technology and/or solid state science and technology. it is awarded every two years, and can be awarded to an individual only once throughout his or her career.
dr. chen's numerous and significant contributions to electrochemistry make him an outstanding candidate to receive and accept this esteemed award. as dr. chen explains, "over two million canadians have diabetes, and it has been scientists' longstanding goal to develop a non-enzymatic electrochemical technique to monitor blood sugar levels for controlling and treating diabetes." his innovative research is now leading to the development of high-performance electrode materials for electrolysis as well as new electrochemical technologies for environmental and biological analysis as he has developed a novel way to oxidize glucose by using an electrochemical process with remarkable sensitivity and selectivity. "this method has significant potential to turn the dream to control and treat diabetes into a reality," adds dr. chen. a united states patent has been filed for this invention.
dr. chen's research has also gained extensive attention in the areas of wastewater treatment, mining, and the pulp and paper sector, and it has been widely covered by regional, national, and international media. dr. chen will accept the award and deliver a lecture entitled electrochemical study of nanomaterials for green chemistry applications at the 2009 fall symposium of the electrochemical society of the canadian section, to be held at dalhousie university on november 7.
