lakehead forestry professors receive project grants
(thunder bay, ontario - august 4, 2009) ontario is making significant investments in skilled trades and forestry in thunder bay through the northern ontario heritage fund corporation (nohfc). dr. han chen and dr. mathew leitch from the faculty of forestry and the forest environment received project grants from the nohfc: emerging technology program.
dr. leitch received $285,550 over four years for his 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 -forintek innovations partnership project. this project will help develop a partnership with fpinnovations - forintek division and will create up to four full-time and three part-time jobs. the grant will also help lakehead u provide better technical support to the wood products industry by enhancing its wood science facilities.
dr. chen received $150,000 over four years for his project entitled "productivity and diversity of central boreal forest in changing environments." this grant will assist 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 in the development of new research to help improve current forest management and harvest planning. the project will also address some of the top needs identified by forest management professionals to improve ontario's wood supply. two full-time positions and 17 seasonal field work positions will be created through this investment.
minister of northern development, mines and forestry, michael gravelle, and mpp bill mauro announced the funding for the projects at 10:00 a.m. today at confederation college.
the projects of dr. leitch and dr. chen are two of four that the province is investing in through the northern ontario heritage fund corporation. by providing more than $1.6 million to all four projects, the nohfc will help to support the region's forestry sector and the city's post secondary institutions. the projects include:
- research by 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 to improve current forest management and harvest planning
- technical support for the wood products industry provided by 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜
- a new set of forest inventory tools to improve harvesting wood fibre
- new and renovated facilities to train trades people at confederation college
collectively, the nohfc's infrastructure and community development program has provided $170 million to 343 projects since january 2005. specifically, the nohfc's emerging technology program has provided a total of $16 million to 56 projects since january 2005.
