lakehead-orillia launches canada's first interdisciplinary hbasc degree in environmental sustainability

's orillia campus is pleased to announce the launch
of canada's first interdisciplinary honours bachelor of arts and science
degree with a major in environmental sustainability.
dr. alice den otter, chair of interdisciplinary studies at
lakehead's orillia campus, is delighted the program has been approved.
"after more than a year of collaboration, research, and development, it
is wonderful to see this program come to life." dr. den otter, who was
one of the creative and academic supporters of the degree, adds that the
hbasc in environmental sustainability has been designed to produce
well-rounded, environmentally conscious, and responsible citizens with
excellent communication skills and problem solving abilities.
the environmental sustainability program will include courses such
as ecology, environmental politics, philosophy, climatology, aboriginal
people and the forest, and environmental issues. a co-op option will
also be available, where alternating study and work terms will allow

to integrate theory and practice while gaining work
experience in their respective fields.
dr. sreekumari kurissery, a leading researcher in the field of
microbiology, will serve as the program's first academic coordinator.
dr. kurissery believes the new program in environmental sustainability
will be of great benefit to ontario and to canada. "the aim of this
program is to produce well rounded graduates who are critical thinkers,
sensitive to environmental issues, and capable of finding
scientifically-based and ethically sound solutions to problems we face
in fields related to environmental study."
lakehead-orillia will soon be home to canada's first leadership in
energy and environmental design (leed®) platinum university campus, and
will become a hallmark of sustainable and ecologically sensitive
development. lakehead-orillia strives to become one of canada's
greenest campuses in its role as a catalyst for research and learning in
environmental sciences, and will become a demonstration site for green
technology, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
