growing strong: community initiatives bring progress to dementia gardens fundraising goal https://cerah.lakeheadu.ca/news/growing-strong-community-initiatives-bring-progress-to-dementia-gardens-fundraising-goal/ mon, 09 sep 2024 13:19:16 +0000 https://cerah.lakeheadu.ca/?p=11664

on august 18th, cerah hosted a successful native plant garden tour where guests were able to explore 6 different native plant garden sites throughout thunder bay. attendees learned about local plants and received gardening tips from homeowners, while volunteers from cerah and the north west dementia working group shared information on the dementia gardens: a place to grow project. huge thank you to all the homeowners who opened up their properties and shared their gardens with us. though most of the gardens were located on private properties, there is one beautiful public native plant garden located at boulevard lake – the adelaide butterfly garden. we highly recommend you check it out!

additionally, if you are interested in planting your own native plants, visit whispers from the north native plants (our very own dr. elaine wiersma is the owner!).

cerah also had the opportunity to set up our booth at the pass lake 100th anniversary fair on august 24. we were able to engage with many locals and spread the word about the dementia café and dementia gardens. many residents were interested in our dementia resources and research. we also connected with a community leader who has invited us to present at her women’s group! all in all, it was a great day full of connections and community spirit! we look forward to involving more community members in our future projects.

stay tuned for future events and find out how you can support the dementia gardens project by visiting the website.

if you’d like to help support us in getting this project started, we are currently fundraising. every little bit helps to build our infrastructure! we need to develop the site, put in a fence, develop accessible pathways, and build accessible furniture. thanks in advance for your support!

the municipal retirees organization ontario (mroo) has awarded $3,000 to cerah staff member may remenda, who recently completed her master of social work degree with a specialization in gerontology. under the supervision of dr. kathy kortes-miller, may’s work focuses on enhancing dementia care for indigenous residential school survivors relocated to long-term care facilities far from their communities. by advocating for culturally safer care practices, her work aims to ensure these elders are treated with dignity and kindness.

may is the first lakehead recipient of the mroo’s targeted scholarship program. in 2024, the mroo signed an agreement with lakehead to become their second partner school in the new targeted scholarship program.

cerah was well represented in calgary at the national gathering for the advancing indigenous policy & practice knowledge exchange on february 6th – 8th.

we were thrilled to co-host the event with se health and were so inspired by all of the creative and innovative speakers/presenters.

this knowledge exchange served as a vibrant platform for dialogue, learning, and collaboration. we are eager to continue our engagement with initiatives such as this, recognizing that they are important steps forward in honouring and addressing the healthcare needs of indigenous peoples.

as we reflect on our experience, we are reminded of the power of collective action and the importance of listening to indigenous voices. we are committed to being active participants in the journey towards a more equitable future.

the dementia café was abuzz with excitement and joy as they hosted their 2nd annual new year’s eve party at the urban abbey.

the evening was filled with an array of activities, including a potluck dinner, live music, dancing and engaging conversation among friends. the dementia café, known for its safe and welcoming space, once again proved that living with dementia does not mean you have to be socially excluded.

dementia café is a unique program designed by and for individuals living with dementia, their families and their friends. they meet 3 sundays per month at the urban abbey from 2 – 4 pm and often feature live music, art, and games. there is no fee or eligibility criteria for attending, and they also provide complimentary refreshments and pastries.

please enjoy photos of the new years eve party below. for more information on the dementia café, or to get involved, please contact dementia.cafe@lakeheadu.ca.
