the department of history will be hosting a book launch for dr. steven jobbitt's latest publication fodor ferenc Önéletírásai [the autobiographical works of ferenc fodor].

published by elte eötvös józsef collegium (hungary) and co-edited with róbert győri this edited collection of four previously unpublished autobiographical documents by the hungarian geographer ferenc fodor (1887-1962) sheds important light on the life and work of a scholar and public intellectual whose career as a researcher began in the late austro-hungarian period and ended in the early communist era with the publication of his final book in 1957. accompanied by a substantial introduction (in both english and hungarian), this collection makes a significant contribution to the history of hungarian geography, and opens up critical and ultimately timely perspectives on a hungarian intellectual whose work has seen a revival in the context of hungary's post-communist shift to the right.

history for lunch on 5 october will feature the short documentary film "enemy aliens in fort william." 

during wwi, ukrainian canadians were deemed enemy aliens by the government. some ended up in prisoner-of-war camps while many others were unable to find work. the entire community suffered. this film tells the story of the ukrainians in fort william, and sheds important light on the experience of enemy aliens in canada during the war.

history for lunch is a lecture series sponsored by the department of history and, in recognition of the centennial of the first world war, is focused this year on non-canadian aspects of the conflict. this is an opportunity to put a bit of history in your diet and for members of the department of history to showcase their research. more information about the sessions can be found on the   department of history website (history.lakeheadu.ca) and on our facebook page (facebook.com/lakeheadhistory)

on 25 september tim irish will be presenting on “when the noronic burned in toronto.” this presentation is part of the 2016-17 thunder bay historical museum society's lecture series. it is also a special presentation in honour of the 100th anniversary of the office of the fire marshal emergency management.

since 1908, the thunder bay historical museum society has been regularly holding talks on a wide range of topics on the fourth tuesday of each month at the thunder bay museum (425 donald street east) from september to april. the lecture series is being sponsored by the department of history and forms part of its 2013-14 speaker series.

biography - dr. keijo virtanen
 
keijo virtanen’s research work began at the university of turku, finland. he published his doctoral dissertation in 1979 on the return of finnish migrants from overseas countries, particularly the united states and canada.
 
in addition to migration and ethnicity, his publications focus on the influence of north-american culture in finland, the methodological questions of historical research as well as university and science policy.
 
he held a number of positions in the university of turku and the academy of finland. he was appointed the professor of cultural history in 1990, having worked as an acting professor since 1983. he was a research assistant at the university of michigan in 1974-75 and fulbright researcher in 1988-89. in the 1970s he made several long trips to canada and the united states to microfilm archival material on finnish immigrants.

keijo became the longest-serving rector/president of the university of turku (1997-2012).
 
he has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the klaipeda university (lithuania) and the university of tartu (estonia). he is the honorary consul of estonia in southwest finland.
 
after his retirement in 2012, keijo continues with his research on migration.
 
the john morton center for north american studies was established at the university of turku in 2014 as led by him. he is the chair of the council of the institute of migration. keijo and his wife orvokki have two children, seppo and marjaana, and six grandchildren. seppo has a doctorate in information technology and marjaana in musicology.
 
keijo virtanen will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters on saturday afternoon.
